Receptacles & Switches

Receptacles and switches can last a very long time. Typical expected lifetime is anywhere from 15-50 years.

Life expectancy is drastically affected by use over the lifetime of the device. Here are the things to look for when deciding if your devices need replacement:

  • Receptacles are loose (cords don’t stay plugged in or fall out easily).
  • Discolored markings from heat on receptacle face.
  • Items only work when plugged in just right.
  • Receptacles are not tamper resistant. New code requires all residential receptacles to be tamper resistant. This is a safety feature to help prevent children or pets inserting unwanted items into 1 side of the receptacle.
  • Receptacles are 2 prong type (no ground prong). Older houses used wire that did not contain a ground. These receptacles must be GFCI protected, in order to have receptacles that accept a ground prong.
  • Switches that feel loose.
  • Switches that do not move to on or off position.
  • Aesthetics – updating plugs and switches throughout the house can make a home feel updated and fresh.
  • Adding dimmers – dimmers allow a room to adjust light levels to your needs at the push of a button.
